After the study on its hardware specification, let see its software feature.

But before we start on the topic, some information I think all the iPhone users should understand about:

Accelerometer
Why iPhone can response to motion? Thanks to this, accelerometer, when you rotate it from portrait to landscape, the accelerometer detects the movement and changes the display accordingly. It helps us to switch between portrait and landscape easily and it gives a better view for the entire width of web page, watching video, viewing photo in its proper aspect ration and it also can control a game using your movements.

Proximity sensor
When you lift iPhone to your ear, the proximity sensor immediately turns off the display to save power and prevent inadvertent touches.

Ambient light sensor
The ambient light sensor in iPhone automatically brightens the display when you’re in sunlight or a bright room and dims it in darker places.

Multi-Touch user interface
Apple lets you fully control your iPhone with only your fingers, not only a finger. You can type using the predictive keyboard, glide through albums with Cover Flow, scroll through photos with a flick, or zoom in and out on a section of a web page — all courtesy of Multi-Touch. You can double "touch" on the screen, put your 2 fingers on it at the same time, put your finger on the screen and drag it to any direction to perform certain function and command on iPhone.

How it works?? (From Apple)
The Multi-Touch display layers a protective shield over a capacitive panel that senses your touch using electrical fields. It then transmits that information to the LCD screen below it. And the iPhone software enables the flick, tap, and pinch.

Ok, after a bit of warm up, let get in to the topic.

Let us start at the some of basic features for a mobilephone:

1. Making a phone call
Fortunately, iPhone 3G did a really great improve from its previous version, iPhone which is the numberpad issue. For the previous iPhone, you need to get through 6 steps to get the numberpad to make a normal phone call. Unbelievetable? Well, now you can just simply get the numberpad to make a call from the call function at Dock. Cheers up for the improvement. Beside this, you can sync all your contact list from your computer to iPhone through iTunes.

NEW feature==> Visual Voicemail: Visual Voicemail plays your messages in any order you want, just like email. Listen to your fourth voicemail message without listening to the three before it. Visual Voicemail shows you a list of all your messages — and who they’re from — so you can play them in any order you please.

I wonder that maybe just simply send a SMS will be make thing easier, isn't it?

2. Creating a SMS
SMS messages appear on your iPhone as an ongoing chat, so it’s easy to pick up a conversation where you left off and due to its Multi-Touch keyboard, it predicts and suggests words as you type, iPhone texts smarter than any smartphone. It also supports with multi-languages such as chinese, japanese, french.... so you want to write chinese or even japanese? Not a problem for iPhone...

Although the SMS interface is quite fresh to us but you still need to understand this, iPhone is more concentrate on email feature so MMS... no supported because Steve feel that using email to send picture will be easier and much better than using MMS, or maybe it will cost cheaper than MMS??

Next, let us see how powerful does a iPhone can make.

Web browsing and email
Because it is supported with 3G and Wi-Fi features, so we can understand how good they try to make iPhone for internet surfing, receiving email and get the information from internet such as stock, forecasting and others through Apple App.

It is built-in the Safari web browser which is one of the best, fast and safe web browser in the world. You can enjoy a high speed of the internet service through 3G or using WLAN. It also can sync your bookmark on your PC or MAC through iTunes. But it is still facing a lot of plug-in compatibily problem for Safari. Apple doesn't support Java or J2ME, window media player and a lot more plug-in that FireFox and IE can support but Safari cannot. So can you still fully enjoy the web browsing experience??

For the email session, thanks to the intelligent iPhone keyboard with built-in dictionary, it predicts and suggests words as you type, making it fast and easy to write email. iPhone also support for popular email servers and providers including MobileMe, Microsoft Exchange, Yahoo! Mail, Google Gmail, AOL and most industry-standard IMAP or POP mail systems. iPhone supports rich HTML email, so images and photos appear alongside text. Reading and sending a email can be just simple. Steve said you can just sending a email under the table during your lesson. But is it possible? Because it doesn't come with a real keypad so we can't even get the feedback from it. How a touch screen keyboard can provide the feedback?? Technlogy haven't reach so advance yet... And don't know got someone realize this problem, copy and paste function is not available on iPhone... even my Nokia 5300 can perform copy and paste function. Really cannot understand what is Steve thinking about.

iPhone supports many kinds of file such as pdf, jpg, .tiff, .gif (images); .doc and .docx (Microsoft Word); .htm and .html (web pages); .key (Keynote); .numbers (Numbers); .pages (Pages); .pdf (Preview and Adobe Acrobat); .ppt and .pptx (Microsoft PowerPoint); .txt (text); .vcf (contact information); .xls and .xlsx (Microsoft Excel). Want to preview your report attached with the email? You can do it on your iPhone 3G.

Want to find your way to somewhere you don't know the way to go? iPhone 3G features with A-GPS. A mean assisted. Maps on iPhone 3G combines GPS, Wi-Fi, and cell tower location technology with the Multi-Touch interface to create the best mobile map application ever. You can even check the traffic in between your current location to the destination. It also finds points of interest by keyword: Search for “coffee” and iPhone shows you every cafe nearby. With this you won't lost in the city again and you can even find for restaurant or cafe nearby. Well, I can say iPhone really make A-GPS become a very powerful tool as a travel guide.

Multimedia player and viewer
Do you use iTouch before? or any model of iPod? We know how good iPod is and you can get it on your iPhone. With iPod feature, your iPhone can be one amazing iPod. You can browsing your music in Cover Flow, a really nice music player interface that I admit is the best in the world so far and watching video with its 3.5 inch widescreen. iPhone brings you a video experience unlike any other portable device. Worry about get a call while listening to music? A pinch of the microphone on your iPhone headset pauses the tune and answers the call. It is really amazing on the multimedia player feature but iTouch can do the same job also. I really nothing to comment about its multimedia performance because it is just amazing.

Furthermore, are you a regular customer of iTunes Store? Want to purchase and download the song you like on the move. It can be achieved on iPhone. You can buy music over the air from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPhone and what you need to do is prepare your iPhone and find a Wi-Fi hot spot. You can just simply pick your from more than 6 million songs and download into your iPhone.

With a built-in 2megapixel camera and an advanced photo application, it takes snapshots, automatically syncs photos with your PC or Mac, displays albums with the flick of a finger, and posts pictures directly to a MobileMe Gallery.

User interface:
Beside the multi-touch feature and Accelerometer, iPhone also supports many home screen at the same time. The idea is just similiar with the Spaces feature on MAC or many desktop on WINDOW. This is something new in mobilephone interface and it is really useful to the user sometime. It can help us to categorize all the icons well and in order. iPhone can install applications to enhance the feature and provide more service to user just like how Symbian and Window Mobile did but it doesn't support so many kinds of application like Symbian.

Sorry for the long post but ya... this is the overall for the iPhone feature. Later on will compare some of the mobilephone from Apple competitors and let see how really good for iPhone use as a mobilephone. Does it really practical for all mobilephone users? and how good for other mobilephones those can compete with iPhone? Coming up next...

Think for yourself,
Make the right choice.
